Outline Numbering Frustration

  • I would like to use muti-level outline numbering with both the built-in heading styles and some user-defined styles. i.e.,

    1 Heading 1
    2 Heading 1
    2.1 Heading 2
    2.2 User-defined style 2
    2.2.1 Heading 3
    2.2.2 User-defined style 3
    etc..

I defined one pane of the outline numbering styles to link to the heading x styles, and another to link to my user-defined styles.

Unfortunately, I end up with the numbering resetti ng every time I change from a Heading style to a User-Defined style. i.e.,

    1 Heading 1
    2 Heading 1
    2.1 Heading 2
    1.1 User-defined style 2
    1.1.1 Heading 3
    1.1.1 User-defined style 3
    etc..

    Any advice ?

  • NEVER create user-defined styles in outline numbering.

Open a new document and create the outline numbering styles ONLY USING THE BULLETS AND NUMBERING LEVEL options...do NOT attempt to change any numbering or indents in the regular window.

Change the font all you want in the regular window and then update the style.

Don't expect the style 2.2 to NOT be numbered, which is what a lot of people do. If they're not all numbered, then don't use outline numbering.
